Dadoe
A slot in a piece of wood, or the act of creating a dadoe.
Lap Joint
A joint in wood where one piece overlaps the other. It can be at two ends, in a T configuration, or an X configuration, in any angle.
In these articles I'm using it in a 90 degree angle, usually at the ends of the wood, as in the picture.
To make a half lap, to cut 1/2 of the thickness of the wood from each piece, so that when they are joined together, the thickness is the same as one piece of wood.
This provides a large surface area for the glue to bond.
It is used often on cabinetry faces
Rabbet
A specific type of edge to a piece of wood, a rectangular rabbet has a step shape, or the act of creating a rabbet.
Tenon
A way to join pieces of wood which increases the amount of wood surface for gluing.
There are many kinds of tenons, this is an end to end tenon.
Finding Studs
To fasten to a wall securely, you need to locate the studs.- The easiest way is with an electronic stud finder, it somehow finds where the wall is not hollow.
- The next best way is to know where the studs are because you built the wall, and remember, or wrote down, where the studs are.
- Next is sounding and testing. You tap on the wall listening for the difference in pitch where the studs are located. Then, drive a thin nail into the drywall, if it 'pops' through, you missed the stud, if it starts to 'stick' in wood, you found it!
Cold Light Head
A type of enlarger head that uses a small diameter fluorescent tube, since fluorescent lights are not as hot as normal light bulbs, the term Cold Light Head has been adopted for these units. There is a lot of debate about cold light heads versus condenser enlarger heads, I have articles on this site discussing these issues, but in summary, in my opinion, a cold light head will increase consistency, but can not do color, nor can it do variable contrast papers. I use a Zone VI Cold Light head, and I love it. (I have been corrected on the use of VC paper, you can add 10 yellow to get good results, when I can organize the e-mail I have, I'll put that information here)Romex
